Here are some faces from the farm.
Sara the goat
When we bought our angora (not pure) goats, Sara was only a day old and sat on my lap for the drive back to the farm. Her mother died soon after, and so Sara became the orphan kid who played chase and tag with my daughter. Sara will be 10 years old this October, and still greets everyone with a friendly nudge.
Basketful of cats
We have had a lot of cats here on the farm, over 10 in 10 years. It is a hard life for cats, even though it doesn’t look like it in the picture.
We have had our cats poisoned, (neighbours put poison out for rats or dogs they don’t like). We have had them disappear or killed by dogs. And we even had one die of old age. They are farm cats, live outside, keep the rats in check. Some are part wild, but most are friendly, taken in when they are left starving on our doorstep. One has a broken tail and a scratchy meow after a cold almost killed her, but she is loud and gently.

It is hard in Chile for strays. They have few places you can take strays, so people dump cats and dogs in the country. Once someone dumped 5 puppies outside our house. We managed to take them to a local place that tries to find homes for them, but we had to leave dog food.
The worst I remember is when we first arrived and my daughter started school. Someone left a box of week old puppies in a box outside the school on a Friday morning. When I took her to school Monday morning, the box was still there, but the puppies were dead.
The stray dogs was one of the biggest shocks for me when I first came here 16 years ago, but I think it is getting better as people are more concerned for animal welfare.

Awww! Sara looks like a sweetheart! I just want to snuggle those kitties! My kitten, Charlie, was a barn kitty. He was orphaned and luckily they rescued him and his siblings in time. He ended up being bottle fed. I’m glad to hear that animal welfare is becoming more recognized in Chile.
Yes, I am glad that more people are becoming aware about animal’s welfare. It really makes a difference when you know there is somewhere you can take strays.

Yeah, she is a real tough cat, and used up some of her 9 lives! Someone left her as a kitten near our house. Every time we went out for a walk she was sitting in the same place on the wall, getting thinner. So we took her in.
